HPSC HCS Syllabus 2024 for Prelims Exam

The first stage of selection in Haryana Civil Services is the preliminary examination. HPSC HCS Prelims is a qualifying round and the marks obtained in this round will not be added to the final merit list. HPSC HCS Prelims Exam will consist of two papers- Paper I General Studies and Paper II Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). Questions will be objective type. Each paper will be of two hours. CSAT paper is a qualifying paper, where candidates need to score a minimum of 33%. The results of Prelims will be based on the performance in Paper I and minimum 33% in Paper II. HPSC HCS Syllabus 2024 for Prelims Paper I

Paper I in Haryana Civil Services Preliminary Examination is on General Studies. The subjects of HCS Prelims Paper I are-

  • Indian culture, Indian politics and Indian economy.

general Science General Science questions will include general appreciation and understanding of science including matters of daily observation and experience.
Current events of national and international importance. In Current Affairs, knowledge of important national and international events will be tested.
History of India and Indian National Movement Emphasis will be laid on a broad general understanding of the subject in the history of India, its social, economic and political aspects. Questions on the Indian National Movement will relate to the nature and character of the nineteenth century resurgence, the growth of nationalism and the attainment of independence.
Indian and World Geography In Geography, emphasis will be on the geography of India. Questions on Geography of India will relate to the physical, social and economic geography of the country including the main features of Indian agriculture and natural resources.
Indian Culture, Indian Politics and Indian Economy Questions on Indian Politics and Economy will test knowledge of the country’s political system and the Constitution of India. Panchayati Raj, Social System and Economic Development in India.

HPSC HCS Syllabus 2024 for Prelims Paper II

As per HPSC HCS Syllabus 2024, Paper II in the preliminary exam is Civil Services Aptitude Test or CSAT. The topics under this section are-

  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills.
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability.
  • Decision making and problem-solving.

HPSC HCS Syllabus 2024 for Mains

Candidates who qualify the HPSC HCS preliminary examination will appear for the Haryana Civil Services Main Examination. In the HPSC HCS Main Examination, there will be four papers of traditional/essay type which will be of 3 hours duration each. Total marks in main examination will be 600. Paper – I: English (Including English Essay)

The purpose of the paper is to test the candidate’s ability to read and understand serious argued prose in English and to express his ideas clearly and correctly. This section will have two parts – English and Essay.

  • Usage and Vocabulary
  • General Grammar/Composition

Essay- Candidates have to write an essay on a specific topic. Choice of subjects will be given. They will be expected to stay close to the topic of the essay in order to organize their ideas in an organized manner and write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and accurate expression.

Paper-II: Hindi in Devanagari script (including Hindi essay)

  • Translation of an English passage into Hindi.
  • Letter/summary writing.
  • Explanation of Hindi passage (prose and poetry) in one language.
  • Composition (idioms, improvisation, etc.).

Paper – III: General Studies.

Part I: In Part I, there are following topics:

  • Geography of India.
  • Indian Polity.
  • Current national issues and topics of social relevance.
Subject Explanation
History of Modern India and Indian Culture History of Modern India will cover the history of the country since the mid-nineteenth century and will also include questions on important personalities who shaped the independence movement and social reforms. The section related to Indian culture will cover all aspects of Indian culture from ancient times to modern times.
Geography of India In this part, there will be questions on physical, economic and social geography of India.
indian polity This part will include questions on the Constitution of India, political system and related matters.
Current national issues and topics of social relevance This part aims to test the candidate’s awareness of current national issues and topics of social relevance in present-day India, such as the following: Demography and Human Resources and related issues.

Behavioral and social issues and social welfare problems, such as child labour, gender equality, adult literacy, rehabilitation of the disabled and other deprived sections of the society, drug abuse, public health, etc. Law enforcement issues, human rights, corruption in public life, communal harmony, etc.

Internal security and related issues. Environmental issues, ecological conservation, conservation of natural resources and national heritage. The role of national institutions, their relevance and need for change.

    • Indian economy.
    • International Affairs and Institutions.
    • Developments in the fields of science and technology, communications and space.

India and the world This part aims to test the candidate’s awareness of India’s relations with the world in various areas, such as the following:-

Foreign Affairs External security and related matters. Nuclear policy. Indians abroad.

indian economy In this part, there will be questions on planning and economic development in India, economic and trade issues, foreign trade, role and functions of IMF, World Bank, WTO etc.
International Affairs and Institutions This part will include questions on important events in world affairs and international institutions.
Developments in science and technology, communications and space Questions in this part will test the candidate’s awareness of developments in the fields of science and technology, communications and space and basic ideas about computers.
Statistical Analysis, Graphs and Diagrams This part will include exercises to test the candidate’s ability to draw common sense conclusions from information presented in a statistical, graphical, or diagrammatic form and to point out deficiencies, limitations, or inconsistencies therein.

Paper – IV: An Optional Subject

As per HPSC HCS Syllabus 2024, Paper IV will be an optional subject. For this paper, candidates have to select only one optional subject out of the 29 optional subjects given below in which they want to appear in HPSC HCS Mains 2024. The optional subject is selected at the time of filling the application. The form will not be changed under any circumstances.
