In response to a video widely viral on social media, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Paytm have said that there is no way to use a smartwatch to scan FASTag and withdraw money from it. This video has become a cause of controversy at many places.

The claim being made in the video shows a child scanning the FASTag using a smartwatch while cleaning the windshield and then running away when questioned, which is a baseless and false video. NPCI, the digital payment and settlement system organization in India, said that this is a baseless and false video. Whereas Paytm said that this is wrong information.

The video clip, which was shared widely on various social media platforms, has received millions of views, shares and comments on many YouTube channels, Facebook and Twitter.

A voiceover in Hindi says “This new scam has now started. Children begging at traffic lights are being given smartwatches with scanners embedded in them. While cleaning the car, they link their smartwatches to FASTag. And let’s do it. Through this your FASTag is e-scanned. After that money is deducted from your Paytm account. Same thing has happened with me earlier also.” This is explained in the 3.42 minute clip.

A similar claim about a ‘Fastag scam’ was also made by magician and illusionist Karan Singh in an interview given to content creator Vinmare Kasana on his Dostcast YouTube channel. It received nearly 1.5 lakh views and 11,000 shares.

FASTag, based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, is an electronic toll collection system which has been made mandatory for all commercial and personal vehicles for payment at toll plazas since February last year. During this period, Paytm discussed only child videos, while NPCI discussed the bigger issue of videos making fake claims.

Paytm said in a Twitter post that “A video is spreading misinformation about Paytm FASTag which wrongly shows a smartwatch scanning FASTag. As per NETC guidelines, FASTag payments can be initiated only by official merchants. Testing “It has been activated after several rounds of testing. Paytm Fastag is absolutely safe and secure.”
