Hiroshi Lockheimer indicated that the user experience with smartphones that connect directly to satellite will be quite different from regular cellular connectivity. He did not tell much except that this feature will be enabled in Android 14.
Wild to think about user experiences for phones that can connect to satellites. When we launched G1 in ’08 it was a stretch to get 3G + Wi-Fi working. Now we’re designing for satellites. Cool! Excited to support our partners in enabling all of this in the next version of Android!

Recently, information was revealed that SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network will start service directly on smartphones from next year. That means the phone will get network directly from satellite. There are preparations to start this service in America. Elon Musk and T-Mobile President and CEO Mike Siewert announced the plan recently during a webcast program at SpaceX’s Starbase facility in southern Texas. Both the companies are working on a project named Coverage Above and Beyond. Its aim is to provide smartphone connectivity to T-Mobile customers everywhere. Regarding this, Elon Musk said that I think this is really a big game changer. Coverage above and beyond will require Starlink version 2, which is expected to become operational next year.
At the same time, Apple is also keen to offer satellite connectivity in its upcoming iPhone 14 series. According to a recent report, hardware testing for satellite communication in iPhone 14 was completed even before this series of smartphones reached the mass production stage. However, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is unsure about the presence of this feature in the iPhone 14, as Apple will have to deal with satellite operators for it. Will have to do. If this feature is included, satellite connectivity in the iPhone 14 series will only allow emergency text and voice services.
