The 2023 Asian Games marks a historic milestone for India as India secured its 100th medal during the event held in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China. On October 7, 2023, India women’s Kabaddi team etched its name in history by defeating Chinese Taipei 26-25 in the final, contributing to India’s century of medals at the Asian Games. This achievement is significant as it is the first time that India has reached the 100 medal mark in the Asian Games.
The 19th edition of the Asian Games featured various sports including archery, athletics, aquatics, basketball, baseball, badminton, boxing, cycling, football, gymnastics, karate, judo, rugby, canoeing, softball, table tennis, volleyball, and much more. 655 Indian athletes participated. The event, scheduled to run from September 23 to October 8, 2023, has been a platform for athletes from across Asia to compete across a variety of disciplines.
Overall, India’s impressive medal tally includes 25 gold, 35 silver and 40 bronze medals. The Asian Games, the world’s second largest multi-sport event after the Olympics, focuses on promoting friendship among Asian countries. The feat marks the second time that India has reached the milestone of 100 medals in major international competitions, the first being at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, where India had won 101 medals.
