Elon Musk's social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) has banned a large number of accounts in India. This is not the first time that the platform has taken such a step. Even before this, from X to lakhs of accounts have been banned. One of the main reasons accounts are banned is for violating X's policies, as these accounts allegedly engage in child exploitation and promotion of non-consensual nudity.

TOI's According,X has banned 3,33,036 accounts between October 26 and November 25. Newly appointed CEO Linda Yaccarino had banned 2,233 accounts at the time of writing this month. The reason behind the account being banned is due to a violation of the account policy, which relates to the promotion of pedophilia and non-consensual nudity. Additionally, 2,233 accounts were banned for being involved in promoting terrorism in India, taking the total number of accounts banned to 3,35,269 during the reported period.

The report says this blanket ban is in line with X's compliance with the new IT Rules 2021. Under these rules, major digital and social media platforms with more than 5 million users are required to publish monthly compliance reports. In compliance with this, X released a monthly report revealing a total of 1,062 complaints from users in India during the specified time frame. Of these, 52 complaints were related to appellate account suspension. After review, the company lifted the ban on only 1 account, while the rest will remain suspended.

The This wave of account bans is not the first incident. For example, between August 26 and September 25, 557,764 accounts were banned for promoting terrorism, while 1,675 were removed. Over the next month, from September 26 to October 25, 234,584 accounts in India faced bans and 2,755 were removed for promoting terrorism.
