By letting users set favorite contacts at the top of the calls tab, WhatsApp is making it clear that important contacts are front and center in the calling interface. One-tap calling capability makes it clear that the full WhatsApp calling experience becomes better and more convenient. It can be safely assumed that users will be able to choose between a voice or video call when they tap on a favorite contact.
It is not yet clear how users will be able to set favorite contacts but as can be seen in the background of the screenshot, this can be done from the calls tab. It would be safe to assume that users will be able to long press on a contact to set it as a favorite contact. Once a contact is added to favourites, it will appear at the top of the calls tab. Users can simply tap on a favorite contact at the top to start a call with them.
This feature is not live for all users and hence we will have to wait for the official statement from WhatsApp on this. Meanwhile, WhatsApp recently introduced pinned events in the community for beta users on Android. This feature can automatically recognize events shared in community groups and make them appear at the top of the WhatsApp community for the convenience of users.
