Micro-blogging site Twitter has started showing a new tick badge with the word “Official” on verified accounts of news websites and prominent individuals in India. Along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Twitter account of Tech News by Careers Ready has received this tick. However, a blue tick indicating that an account has been verified is also visible.

The central government is amending the IT rules to make these platforms legally accountable for preventing prohibited and misinformation content on social media platforms in India. The government has made it clear that platforms like Facebook and Twitter operating in the country will have to follow the laws of the country as well as take care of the constitutional rights of the users. There is a provision to create an Appellate Committee in the new rules, which can cancel the decisions of big tech companies on requests related to removing or blocking content. Social media companies have been accused of being negligent regarding content or not resolving complaints quickly.
