The document states that WhatsApp, iMessage and Line apps all offered “limited” message content at the legal request of the FBI. Apart from this, these platforms also voluntarily offered ‘some’ data. At the same time, apps like Signal, Telegram, Threema, Viber, WeChat and Wickr did not disclose the message content. According to the information, the popular Android messaging app i.e. WhatsApp shares only basic subscriber records.

In simple terms, this means that the FBI is able to obtain address book data from both their ‘targets’ and their contacts. FBI can also track the source and destination of messages sent from the app. Meaning, if you have saved the contact information of an FBI target, your address book is also available to the FBI for spying. In the case of iMessage service, the situation is even worse. If iMessage users back up their messages on iCloud, the FBI has access to their message content.
