Google has reportedly removed 16 apps from the Play Store. These apps were draining the battery of smartphones and tablets rapidly and causing high network usage, i.e. increasing the consumption of internet data. A security firm had identified these apps. These apps were committing fraud by opening web pages in the background and clicking on advertisements as real users. According to the security firm, these apps had a total of 20 million or 2 crore installations before being removed from the Play Store. The list of removed apps includes BusanBus, Joycode, Currency Converter, High-Speed ​​Camera, Smart Task Manager, FlashLight+, -Includes K-Dictionary, Quick Note, EzDica, Instagram Profile Downloader and Ez Notes.

McAfee found that once opened, these apps download code that causes users to receive notifications to open web pages, click on links and ads, without alerting them. This activity artificially increases engagement on ads, which is a form of ad fraud.

The security firm found that these apps contained adware code named “com.liveposting” and “com.click.cas”. These codes allowed apps to click on links and advertisements. All this happens without the knowledge of the users, which consumes extra battery and also increases the network usage. According to Google, all these apps have been removed from Play Store and Play Protect blocks these apps on users’ devices.
